Regardless of how aweful AMS can make you feel there are numerous ways to prevent falling ill. The main thing to do is TAKE YOUR TIME! Don’t rush up to the summit as if it will save you time or money; all you’ll be doing is risking your health.
You’ve spent months training to reach the summit, so keep it slow and steady, take the time let your body acclimate itself to the altitude. If you don’t have the money to spend a few days getting used to the environment, the best piece of advice is an old mountaineers maxim: “climb high, sleep low.”
Another important factor is the route that you choose to follow. Whichever trail that you decide to take, it is imperative that you take day’s rest before seizing the summit.
In many studies it is shown that men are more likely to fall ill with AMS than women. Young men in particular have been shown to be very vulnerable. Many young men will get on a competitive streak and learn the hard way that just because they are stronger and are in better shape that doesn’t mean they can’t potentially fall ill with AMS. AMS is not based upon your strength or even fitness. You just have to learn to take your time and to acclimate properly.
As always, eat as well as possible. Fatigue and dehydration are major contributers to AMS. Eat as many fruits as possible and take a drink of water every few minutes while walking. WATER, Water and more water. Many water packs are available on the market that allow you to take sips of water as you walk without breaking your stride.
